Pro-euro candidate leads Finland presidential vote

Two pro-euro candidates appeared headed for a February runoff in Finland’s presidential race after a first round of voting Sunday, according to complete results.
With all boxes reporting, conservative former Finance Minister Sauli Niinisto had a solid lead with just under 37% percent of the vote. Meanwhile, pro-European Green League candidate Pekka Haavisto passed euro-skeptic Paavo Vayrynen to claim the No. 2 spot, with 18.8% over Vayrynen’s 17.5%. Vayrynen had been running second in earlier returns.
Niinisto and Haavisto — Finland’s first openly gay presidential candidate, according to Finnish media — are vying to succeed Tarja Halonen, Finland’s first female president. Halonen has has reached her two-term limit after beating back a challenge from Niinisto, of the conservative National Coalition Party, in 2006.http://www.stwz.net
A runoff between the top two finishers is slated for February 5. Turnout was estimated at nearly 73% of Finland’s 4.4 million eligible voters. The eventual winner will break a 30-year lock on the presidency by Halonen’s Social Democrats.
Finland is one of the states that joined the euro from the beginning, when Niinisto was finance minister. He insists Finland should stay in the eurozone, despite the debt crisis that has taken some of the shine off the common currency.
His NCP won the top share of votes in last April’s parliamentary election, and already leads a broad coalition government that includes the Social Democrats.
Finland is one of the few remaining AAA-rated countries in the eurozone. But 2012 is only expected to deliver a growth of 0.4%, with the possibility of a new recession, its finance ministry reports.
It has had to take part in the bailouts of other euro states who faced deep financial problems, such as Greece and Ireland. Many Finns now see Niinisto — who also served as deputy chairman of the European Investment Bank — as someone who can stand up for Finland’s interests in the single currency.
Haavisto, meanwhile, has served as Finland’s environment and development minister and has international experience working for the European Union and the United Nations in Sudan and the Middle East.
Vayrynen and his Center Party have argued that Finland should leave the euro, and he insisted before Sunday’s vote that polls showing him running third were wrong. His third-place showing Sunday followed a strong finish in April by the euro-skeptic True Finns Party, which won 39 seats in parliament to become the third-largest party.
The True Finns demanded that Finland stop supporting the eurozone bailouts, but its presidential candidate, Timo Soini, was running fourth in Sunday’s balloting. He told Finnish public broadcaster YLE that his weak support was an indication that his party wants him to remain as party leader, rather than president.
Finland’s president is in charge of the country’s foreign policy, together with the government, and serves as commander-in-chief of its defense forces. But recent changes have seen more power being given to the government and parliament, and former President Mauno Koivisto told YLE that there was a risk of an “imbalance” between the direct public election of the president and the office’s diminishing power.

Obama: Iran’s economy a ‘shambles’ after sanctions

US President Barack Obama said US-led sanctions had reduced Iran’s economy to a “shambles,” in a robus  defense of his policy towards Tehran following sharp Republican attacks.   http://www.stwz.net
Obama had previously been reticent in responding to Republican campaign attacks over his efforts to deter Iran’s nuclear program, but addressed the issue at a fundraising event in New York, a center of the US Jewish community.
He said he had mobilized the world and built an “unprecedented” sanctions regime targeting Iran to state “unequivocally that we’re not going to tolerate a nuclear weapon in the hands of this Iranian regime.”
“We’ve been able to organize folks like China and Russia that previously would have never gone along with something like this,” Obama said, referring to the support for sanctions of fellow UN Security Council permanent members.
“And it’s been so effective that even the Iranians have had to acknowledge that their economy is in a shambles.”
“When I came into office, Iran was united and the world was divided. And now what we have is a united international community that is saying to Iran, you’ve got to change your ways.”
But Obama admitted that Iran had not yet decided to throw open its nuclear program to international scrutiny in a way that would help it move out of isolation.
Obama spoke hours after European Union nations agreed to sanction Iran’s central bank, freezing assets used to finance its nuclear drive, in a move that further penalized and isolated the Islamic state.
The US leader signed into law a new set of US sanctions last month which target Iran’s oil sector and seek to make foreign firms choose between doing business with Tehran or the United States.
Republicans seeking to turf Obama out of office in November’s election have savaged his approach on Iran, saying that it shows weakness and have even said that the president has failed to prepare for the possibility of a military attack against Tehran’s nuclear program.
“If we reelect Barack Obama, Iran will have a nuclear weapon. If you elect Mitt Romney … they will not have a nuclear weapon,” the former Massachusetts governor and 2012 Republican frontrunner said in November.
Earlier this month, in South Carolina, Romney slammed Obama for being too slow to support the Iranian democracy protests in 2009.
“When there were over a million people in the streets of Tehran screaming for freedom, he was silent,” Romney said.
Romney’s rival Newt Gingrich has said the Iranian regime could be replaced within a year while Rick Santorum has compared Obama to “feckless” president Jimmy Carter, who saw hopes of a second term in 1980 dissolved in an Iranian hostage crisis.
Obama also told the mainly Jewish audience in New York that he had not seen the progress he had hoped for in his efforts to forge peace between Israel and the Palestinians.
And he also implicitly took aim at another area of Republican criticism that he had weakened US support for Israel.
“We’ve got the strongest military cooperation that we’ve ever had between our two nations. That’s not my opinion, by the way — that’s the Israeli government’s opinion,” he said.

Analysis: Not-so-covert Iran war buys West time, raises tension

A backseat passenger on a motorcycle weaving through the crush of Tehran’s morning traffic reaches out and places a small magnetic device on the door of a silver-grey Peugeot 405.
When the directional bomb explodes seconds later, blasting through the sedan’s door and instantly killing nuclear scientist Mostafa Ahmadi-Roshan, a 32-year-old father of one, the motorcycle has already vanished, accelerating into the ranks of the Iranian capital’s rush hour.
The proficiency of the latest assassination to deplete Iran’s community of atom specialists suggests that violent actions by one or more of Iran’s adversaries form an increasingly active – and public – element in a multifaceted international drive to impede Iran’s nuclear program.
Some old espionage hands voice respect for the expert landing of clandestine, deniable blows against a program the West suspects is aimed at acquiring a nuclear bomb capability and Iran says is for civilian purposes.
“Ten out of 10. They hit the target and nobody got caught,” former U.S. intelligence officer Robert Ayers told Reuters of the January 11 killing. “What makes these things so impressive is they gather a lot of information and do their ‘on the ground’ homework, which can take months.”
Sidney Alford, a British explosives expert, says the hit was technically “professional. It worked and it worked very well.”
But whoever the apparently adept perpetrators were, the attack appears to form part of a quickening series of sabotage and assassinations that is growing less covert by the month.
And the more visible the cloak-and-dagger campaign grows, some analysts argue, the more acute its affront to national prestige and sovereignty, and the deeper the siege mentality widely held to motivate Iran’s drive for nuclear prowess.
PRESSURE, OR REGIME CHANGE?
Ahmadi-Roshan was the fourth Iranian nuclear scientist killed in the past two years; another scientist survived an explosion that wounded him and his wife.
Iran says scientists have also been kidnapped, a computer virus attacked its nuclear equipment, and a massive explosion at a military base, which Iran called an accident, killed more than a dozen officers including the head of the Revolutionary Guards missile program.
The campaign, coinciding with a toughening of economic sanctions, may strain any discreet diplomatic feelers between Tehran and Washington, some Western analysts say.
Iran is in defiant mood.
“If Israel thinks they can prevent our studies with four terrorist attacks, it’s a Hogan very weak way of thinking… Everybody will learn that they can’t stop us with such actions,” said Iran parliament speaker Ali Larijani the day after the killing.
Ali Vaez and Charles D. Ferguson of the Federation of American Scientists wrote that “such acts of terrorism” are unlikely to significantly delay or deter Tehran’s nuclear work.
“The resulting climate of insecurity feeds ammunition to hardliners in Tehran demanding reprisals.”
Ahmadi-Roshan’s killing happened less than two weeks after the Obama administration signed into law an unprecedented tightening of sanctions aimed at Iranian oil exports.
To some, the evident effectiveness of tougher sanctions in getting the attention of Tehran’s leaders might obviate at least for the moment any need for a resort to clandestine methods.
In response to a new U.S. law targeting Iranian oil income Tehran threatened to choke the West’s supply of Gulf oil if its exports are hit. Washington warned that the U.S. navy was ready to open fire to prevent any blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, through which a third of the world’s seaborne traded oil passes.
“In this process of ever-accelerating sanctions, we have arrived at a point where sanctions begin to blur into actual warfare,” wrote Iran expert and former U.S. official Gary Sick.
“If the sanctions succeed in their purpose of cutting off nearly all oil exports Scarpe Hogan from Iran, that is the equivalent of a blockade of Iran’s oil ports, an act of war.”
Meanwhile, spectacular mishaps in Iran’s nuclear program or military facilities appear to be multiplying, in tandem with a series of espionage-related incidents that have raised the diplomatic temperature, including an Iranian court’s sentencing of an Iranian-American man to death for spying and the apparent malfunctioning and crash in eastern Iran of a U.S. drone.

UPDATE 1-Motor racing-Another Senna to race for Williams

Brazilian Bruno Senna will
race for Williams this season, following Hogan in the footsteps of his
late uncle and triple world champion Ayrton who died in one of
the Formula One team’s cars at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix.
The former champions, who have carried Senna’s name on all
their cars ever since that fateful May afternoon at Imola, said
in a statement on Tuesday that the 28-year-old would partner
Venezuelan Pastor Maldonado.
Senna, who made his F1 debut with the struggling HRT team in
2010 and competed in the last eight races for Renault last year
as a stand-in, will start testing with Williams at Spain’s Jerez
circuit on Feb. 9.
He replaces 39-year-old compatriot Rubens Barrichello, a
family friend who made his race debut in 1993 with Ayrton as his
mentor, whose Formula One career now appears to be reluctantly
at an end after 19 seasons, 11 race wins and more starts than
any other driver.
“It will be very interesting to drive for a team that my
uncle has driven for, particularly as quite a few of the people
here actually worked with Ayrton,” Senna, whose mother Viviane
was Ayrton’s older sister, said in a statement.
“Hopefully we can bring back some memories and create some
great new ones too.
“I also want to get some good results in return for the
support my country has given me to help get me to this position
today. I am very proud to be Brazilian and more motivated than
ever to demonstrate what I can do.”
No financial details were given, but Senna is expected to
bring a significant Brazilian sponsor with him to a team
currently searching for a new title backer after the departure
of telecommunications giant AT&T.
Senna, who raced karts with Ayrton on the Scarpe Hogan family farm and
also features in the recent award-winning documentary about his
uncle’s life and death, wears a blue cap with the branding of
Brazilian telecoms company Embratel, his personal sponsor.
QUICK LEARNER
The ever-smiling Brazilian made several visits to the team’s
Grove factory before and after Christmas with Williams, who
endured their worst ever season last year, secretly trying him
out in their simulator and putting him through his paces in the
gym.
“The circumstances of Bruno’s two seasons in Formula One have
not given him an ideal opportunity to deliver consistently so it
was essential that we spent as much time with him as possible to
understand and evaluate him as a driver,” said team principal
Frank Williams.
“We have done this both on track and in our simulator and he
has proven quick, technically insightful and above all capable
of learning and applying his learning quickly and consistently,”
he added.
“Now we are looking forward to seeing that talent in our
race car.”
Senna’s appointment leaves just one declared vacancy,
alongside Spanish veteran Pedro de la Rosa at HRT. It also means
Brazil will have two drivers on the grid next season, with
Ferrari’s Felipe Massa the other one.
Once-dominant Williams scored just five points last season,
finishing ninth of the 12 teams, but will have a Renault engine
this year as well as a reorganised technical team under former
McLaren man Mike Coughlan.
“I’m really happy to be a part of a team with such a
fantastic heritage,” said Senna, whose new team have fallen on
tough times since the last of their seven drivers’ championships
in 1997.
“I am very proud that Williams has chosen me to race in what
will be an important year for them. Everyone is extremely
motivated for 2012 and it is great to be part of that
motivation.
“It is true that they didn’t have the best season last year,
but it is clear that the team is on a new path and everyone is
pulling together to ensure that this year is a better one. I
really hope that I can demonstrate what I can do.”

UK’s Clegg says Israeli settlements ‘vandalism’

Britain’s deputy prime minister says Hogan Israel is carrying out “deliberate vandalism” by continuing to build settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem.
Hosting a news conference in London Monday with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Nick Clegg accused Israel of undermining attempts to broker a Middle East peace deal by failing to halt settlement building on land that the Palestinians want for a future state.
“It is an act of deliberate vandalism,” Clegg told reporters, escalating the tone of Britain’s condemnation of settlement activity.
Prime Minister David Cameron and Foreign Secretary Scarpe Hogan William Hague — also meeting Abbas — have previously criticized Israel over settlement building.
Cameron was also meeting with Britain’s Jewish Leadership Council Monday.
